The 2007 vintage was a source of considerable concern to vine growers from the end of April, and right up to the harvest, climatic conditions were chaotic. The sanitary state of the vine necessitated extreme vigilance and a large number of rapid interventions.

Mild and dry. |

Rain at the beginning of February and early budburst, the Merlot on March 19th and the Cabernet Sauvignon on April 2nd. A wet month of March and a particularly hot dry month of April accelerated the budburst of the vine and vegetative growth. Because of this advance precise and very sustained work was necessary in the vineyard. Variable weather from the end of April, alternating without interruption between rain and sun, gave rise to fungicide pressure. The numerous and specifically targeted phytosanitary treatments of the vine kept all our teams mobilized.
As of May 10th a precocious but spread out flowering took place. The chaotic meteorological conditions during this period generated flower abortion particularly in the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Mid-flowering : around May 23rd for the Merlot and May 27th for the Cabernet Sauvignon.
Flowering was spread out as also was the veraison. |

A cool wet summer. Green work in the vineyard during the month of July was of considerable importance, to ensure the good sanitary condition of the grapes as well as to optimize their quality. More than 80 seasonal workers were mobilized at Pichon and Bernadotte to carry out the cutting off of the laterals and selected thinning-out of the leaves so as to obtain optimal maturity. Mid-Veraison as of July 30th. The second two weeks of August saw some heavy showers resulting in a total of nearly 100 mm. On the other hand, the month of September was very dry and sunny which enabled the grapes to ripen slowly and under good conditions. |

| 16.75. This delightfully exotic and perfumed, yet incredibly focused, 2007 from Pichon-Lalande shows their continuing progress back to the very top of the Bordeaux echelon. Benefiting from the advice of Château Angelus’s Hubert de Bouärd and the legendary Jacques Boissenot, Pichon’s 2007 is as beautifully feminine and opulent as ever but also boasts a lovely mineral core to its impeccably balanced vibrant cassis, spice and cedar box palate. Pichon-Lalande always tends to triumph in slightly lesser vintages and their beguiling 2007 looks set emphatically proof the point. Drink 2012-2025 |

88-90. Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, which was disappointing in 2005, has been sold to the Roederer-Deutz Champagne firm, and quality in both 2006 and 2007 (both lesser vintages than 2005) is far better than the 2005.

90.92+. A bright purple colour. The nose is rather compact, slightly lean with notes of blackberry, Morello, smoke and a stalky element. The palate is medium-bodied, the tannins more noticeable compared to previous vintages, with blackberry, earth, graphite and a touch of iodine. The finish has a little more weight, but like other Pauillacs it is rather mean on the finish at first, although with time in glass it gains more cohesion and reveals some fine tannins and great purity of fruit. A delicate peppery quality towards the finish. I have a feeling this could turn around and surprise me because the longer it stays in the glass, the better it becomes. But for the moment I will be prudent with my score. Tasted April 2008.

88/91. This is very firm and racy, with good fruit concentration. Medium-to-full body, chewy tannins and a medium finish. Very good density for the vintage. Wait and see.

| In-house Tasting Note - Thomas DÔ-CHI-NAM - March 2007 |
|
Purple almost black in colour.
This wine gives out aromas of cherry, brioche and violet. Its attack is soft and silky without any tannic astringence. It evolves dynamically in the mouth and caresses the palate. Its fragrance and power rank it a wine of discreet elegance. Its length in mouth and its aromatic palette full of fruit, flowers and spices delight the taster. The finale of this wine goes into a crescendo, to finish like the opening up of a peacock's tail. |
