Again a very dry, particularly during the vegetative period of the vine from April to July. The results of this were a difficult assimilation of nutritive elements for the vine and a less vigorous growth. On the other hand the maturation phase started early and wiped out the heterogeneity of the different parcels. However the cocktail of drought, very high range of temperatures, heatwawe in July and cold month of August created marked disparities between the parcels. This year the grapes were fragile and the danger of botrytis was very strong. It was necessary to take prompt action at the time of the harvest.

Very cold starting in November with temperatures which went down as far as -7°C in December and January. And -1°C and -2°C at the beginning of March.

Rain March 15th and budburst March 29th.
The month of May is marked by bouts of rain and brights period.
Mid-flowering : between June 2nd for the Merlot and June 8th for the Cabernet Sauvignon. The week during the flowering of the Merlot was cold. It was followed by a very hot week during which the Cabernet Sauvignon flowered. This sequence is cold , then hot caused flower abortion in all the grape varieties. At the berry setting it was evident that flower abortion had touched between 10% and 15% of the berries.

July was dry and scorching hot. The vine therefore suffered during its vegetative period. As a result, the berries are small. The lignification started early. Mid-veraison started on August 7th. The month of August was wet (12 days of rain of varying degrees) and cold. On August 25th almost 30 mm of rain fell on one day.

Between the 5th and 10th of September the sun was scorching hot and burnt all the grapes that were exposed. A ten days period of good weather at the end of September at the beginning of October allowed us to pick up in excellent conditions thanks to the commitment of our teams of workers (150 people for Pichon Lalande including 50 Andalusians and 75 people for Bernadotte) and thanks to the fast decision of the teams. These climatic conditions did engender a very high polyphenolic potential.
Picking started on September 20th.
Harvest ended on October 1st.

Cabernet Sauvignon: 64%
Merlot: 36%

WINE ADVOCATE - April 2007
94-96. This gorgeous wine represents an updated version of the 1996. It boats a dense purple color as well as a beautiful nose of espresso roast, chocolate, crème de cassis, cedar and spice. Full-bodied and powerful with high tannin, an attractive mouthfeel, and a multilayered texture, it will be a backward-styled Pichon Lalande.

INTERNATIONAL WINE CELLAR - May/June 2007
90/92. Good saturated ruby-red. Ripe, classy aromas of black raspberry, bitter chocolate and mint, with some intriguing soil suggestions. Ripe, lush and seamless, with good weight and purity of flavour. Not yet showing its personality but suave and laid-back, with a subtle sweetness and a rather round texture. Offers a nice combination of body and fresh acidity. The substantial tannins reach the front tooth. Evolving slowly and a bit tricky to judge today, but this stylish wine seems as concentrated and ripe as the 2005.

LAY & WHEELER - June 2007
Inky in appearance and bright crimson to the rim, the aromas here exhibit some restraint and hint at dark berry fruit. The palate is at once soft in texture and gently mouthfilling, revealing mid-weight, juicy cassis and blackberry fruit, with a pleasing sense of freshness. Currently slightly austere, this is sure to flesh out and take on weight during its élevage. There is already an appealing, succulent note to the finish and a distinctive mineral vein. Long and structured. 2011-2018

FARR VINTNERS - April 2007
17+. One of THE great names of Bordeaux and a true "super-second". Pichon Lalande is one of the most demanded wines of Bordeaux. It is especially popular in the Far East thanks to its slightly exotic, spicy character and plump ripe fruit. There have been changes at Pichon with the new owners - Louis Roederer - bringing in Hubert de Bouard of Angelus as a consultant. In 2006 all the Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc has been downgraded to the second label "La Reserve de la Comtesse" so the grand vin is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon and 36% Merlot, being aged in 50% new and 50% 1 year old barrels. Opulent and powerful on the nose, there's an abundance of plush dark fruits, complemented by smoky oak and suggestions of chocolate and violet cream. The big, succulent palate continues the theme with sexy voluptuous fruit and creamy texture, that fleshes out the bold structure of full velvety tannins. Deep and layered, this is a powerful Pichon that is more extrovert than usual. Potentially even better than the 2005? ONE OF THE WINES OF THE VINTAGE.

BERRY BROS & RUDD - April 2007
17. Full Bodied, Dry, For laying down, Cab−Sauv/Merlot. It is great to see Pichon−Lalande back on superb form in 2006 with a wine whose purity and linear cassis fruit is reminiscent of their cracking 1996. General Manager Gildas d'Ollone and his team have produced a cerebral yet beguiling Pichon−Lalande full of sensual, exotic aromatics and pure supple flavours. This is a massive Pichon softened by a silky texture and velvety finish. New owners Louis Roederer must be delighted with their first vintage here, and rightly so. Drink : 2015-2030

JANCIS ROBINSON - April 2007
16,5+. No Petit Verdot in the blend, unusually. A little weak at the rim. Otherwise dense crimson. Slight brûlée note on the nose and then a bit angular. Very chewy and muscular. A bit awkward really with some slightly green notes. Lots of chew and bite. Not graceful, not sure this vintage suits this property. A bit skinny.

DECANTER - Steven Spurrier – June 2007
18. Deep colour, very much more finesse than Reserve de la Comtesse, seems to have kept all the flesh and fruit of the vintage, lovely expression, all in feminity and lissom depth. 2014-2030.

Neal Martin, Wine-Journal.com - April 2007
91/93. Tasted four times, the best taken directly from the bottle instead of the decanter at the château. A lucid deep garnet hue. The nose is reluctant at first, but builds to reveal a delectable nose of blackberries, blueberries and cedar. The palate is harmonious, complex and unlike the sample from the decanter, devoid of astringency. The Merlot shines on the mid-palate, very smooth and seductive with a lush, floral almost Margaux-like finish. A lesser cousin of the great 2005. Tasted April 2007.

Clyde Beffa (K&L - USA)
Toasty, cedary, cassis aromas that follow on the palate. Great sweet palate entry. Rich and robust. Quite substantial on the palate - more masculine style like 1996 and 1986 vintages.

WINE SPECTATOR
89/91. Lively, with lots of plum, blackberry and liquorice character. Full, round and velvety. Lacks a tiny bit in the midpalate, but nicely done for the vintage.

In-house Tasting Note - Thomas DÔ-CHI-NAM - March 2007
The balance between finesse and power is the print of the great Medoc. Its aromatic expression exhibits raspberries, violets, cherry juices with some cigar notes. Its texture, solid and balanced, shows a long ageing potential. It is a Pichon of precise definition, very good concentrated, expressing with elegance the characteristics of a dry vintage.
