A rather mild winter. Temperatures and rainfall normal for the season.

Ideal conditions in the Spring favoured a rapid and homogeneous flowering which led us to predict an abundant harvest.
Mid-flowering : starting from June, 5th.

The gloomy weather forecast for the summer, with moderate temperatures and rain in August, caused the changing of colour to be delayed and spread over a considerable period of time, which affected the ripening period. As a result, the harvest took three weeks, picking taking place as when each grape variety reached maximum maturity. This rather cool summer has favoured the aromatic expression of the Merlots as well as their balance.
Mid-Veraison : starting August 13th

The month of September was particularly fine and bright with evening temperatures rather cool, conditions which were favorable for the slow ripening of the Cabernets Sauvignons. The magnificent Indian summer was also very beneficial to the Cabernets Francs and Petits Verdots, whose yield was well controlled at Pichon.
The harvest started on September 27th in beautiful weather. The Merlots were picked perfectly ripe and occasionally, due to the great heat, with very high alcohol potential (from 13° to 13,5°).
The Cabernets Sauvignons were picked beginning October 7th in perfect sanitary state and at optimal phenolic and aromatic maturity.
The last grapes were picked on October 14th just before a period of rainfall.

The year 2004 produced the ideal climatic conditions for a northern vineyard area such as the Medoc.

Cabernet Sauvignon: 53%
Merlot: 36%
Cabernet Franc: 4%
Petit Verdot: 7%

17.5. Dark blueish purple. Lots of lift on the nose. Round start to the palate – very Pichon-Lalande – and then nice, neat integrated tannins, quite precise. Very fine sandy tannins contribute to an extremely dry finish. A true interpretation of both terroir and vintage. Not heavy but I think probably more successful than the other Pichon, thanks to its life and transparency. Drink 2015-2030.

91-94. One can’t say enough about the brilliant work being done by manager Thomas Dô-Chi-Nam, who started at Pichon Lalande in 1992.The estate feels the 2004 has much in common with the 1996, but I’m not as convinced. A complex, fragrant bouquet of fennel, black-currants, sweet cherries, licorice and sweet oak is followed by a medium-bodied Pauillac exhibiting excellent concentration, elegance, and acidity as well as nicely textured mouthfeel without being anywhere near the size or opulence of the 2003. It appears to be a modern day version of the 1986, with sweeter, riper fruit. Anticipated maturity : 2008-2020.

16,5. One of the great names of Bordeaux and a true much-loved “super-seconds”. Only 55% of the harvest was used for the first wine this year. This is a lovely ripe Pichon with lots of vanilla and new oak on the nose, with black plumps and spice and some floral notes. On the palate, it is broad, chewy and mouthfilling with plenty of weight and blackcurrant fruit.

89/91. Lovely blackberry and currant aromas with hints of minerals and lightly toasted oak. Medium to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a medium finish. Good wine, with elegance. Wait and see. Could move up a notch.

18.5 points.****. Huge colour, big extracted nose showing café and moka, exotic and explosive on the palate, rich with very seductive fruit balanced by a very long finish, a most individual wine with a fine structure. Drink 2012-2030.

16,5. This is always difficult wine to taste at this stage, but this was the easiest and best in five years.

90/94. Deceptive wine, in that it promises aromatic, easy, perfumed enjoyment on the nose, then shows that it has more than that to offer on the palate. The raspberry perfume is beguiling, but it has a terrific structure as well, with firm tannins and lovely freshness and acidity. Beautiful perfumed length returns for an encore. 2010-2025.

The annual red Bordeaux report - Stephen Tanzer
May 2005
90/93. Good bright medium ruby. Highly aromatic licorice and bitter chocolate. Densely packed and highly concentrated, with dark berry, licorice and graphite flavours firmed and acidity. A very impressive if rather austere young Pichon Lalande ; masculine, brooding and built to age. The very firm but fine sides of the mouth. The merlot here was very ripe but not overripe, noted d’Ollone, who pointed out that the estate’s finest cabernet soil on the plateau next to Latour ; it’s the same thing at Château Palmer. The same family owned Pichon Lalande around 1920s and they loved Merlot.”
