A sufficiently wet winter to replenish the water table.

A mild spring enabled the budding period in the vineyard to take place in a homogeneous way. Flowering was spread over a warm, windy period from May 12th to the end of the month. Some flower abortion (coulure) was noted which contributed to a diminution in the harvest (by comparison with the 2002 vintage).
Mid flowering May 25th to May 28th

The heatwave during the months of July and August led to a slow maturation ; the clayey subsoil and the deep-rootedness of the old vines played an important role in the success of this vintage : the three stormy cloudbursts during July and August enabled the vine to struggle against the heat wave. During the month of September, the variation between the day and night temperatures privileged the accumulation of large quantities of phenolic compounds. The 2003 vintage is marked by the heat wave conditions of the summer.
Mid-veraison from July 30th to August 3rd

Picking started on September 10th for the merlots and on 18th September for the cabernets sauvignons. Picking finished on September 26th.

Cabernet Sauvignon: 65%

In-house Tasting Notes
March 2004
The colour is very concentrated ; dark ruby with purple hints. The nose is fine and delicate with notes of black cherries : one senses a mature wine, full of charm.
Aeration unveils the full complexity of the nose : ripe fruit ; violets, notes of wood. The attack is delicate, respecting the style of the chateau. Considerable volume in the middle of the mouth and a finish ensured by fine and dense tannins. This is a wine of great purity.

95/100. This tastes like crushed grapes and red fruits. It’s big and rich. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a long, long finish. Juicy wine. A cross between the 1995 and 1996. In fact, it could be better than 2000. Wonderful.

**** (4 stars). Huge, almost black colour, smoky, seductive, heady, quite exotic fruit, a quite luscious and succulent wine that seems soft, but will show good ageing potential. 2008-2025.

18+. Very deep purple. Some extremely ripe fruit on the nose. Dense but with attractive, mineral notes. Quite open and lacy. Real substance on the palate. Remarkably gentle and delicate and only then do the tannins push in. The analysis suggests the tannin level is very high but this is not obvious on the palate – well managed ! Fresh note of green apples and great depth of flavour. Neat, well put together. More true to the estate’s style than overwhelmed by the vintage than at many other properties. Drink 2010-2020.

WINE ADVOCATE - Robert Parker
April 2004
93-95. The blend possesses an opaque purple color to the rim as well as lovely aromas of spring flowers, crème de cassis, blackberries, and a hint of roasted espresso. Dense, opulent, and medium to full-bodied, with outstanding purity, and no trace of over-ripeness, it should drink well young, and last for 15-20 years. Although it reveals a more classic style than the 1982 did at a similar stage, its similarities with that vintage are unmistakable. Anticipated maturity : 2008-2020.

BERRY BROS & RUDD - Simon Staples

17,5. The rivalry in recent vintages between the wine here and that of her cousins across the road at Pichon Baron seems to have pushed both estates to ever-greater heights. Even with slightly more Cabernet-Sauvignon here than usual (65%) Pichon Lalande retains her title of Queen of Pauillac, with another wonderfully perfumed, elegant and charming wine in 2003. This is more reminiscent of the great Pichon Lalandes of the past, with backbone and opulence sitting hand in hand with the delicacy for which Pichon is so famous. This looks likely to be better than their 2000. Drink 2009-2025.
