The Petit Verdot produced an exceptional cuvée. A fine, elegant wine of great class.

The early months of the year were warm and dry, which brought about an early bud-break
in the vines (beginning of March, 3 weeks earlier than normal).
|
| |
 |
The flowering was also ahead of schedule but was disrupted and spread out as a result
of heavy rains in late May and June, as well as a drop in temperature.
|
| |
 |
July and August were very hot and dry, although the end of August saw the arrival of torrential rains.
The colouring of the berries (veraison) was very drawn out, which brought about different rates of ripening
between different plots, vines, and even bunches.
|
| |
 |
September was exceptionally hot and dry.
The harvest was very early, starting on the 11th September, and lasting for three weeks.
The ripeness of the Merlot determined the start of the harvest, but it was necessary to wait until the end of the
month before bringing in the Cabernet Sauvignon.

| Robert Parker - The Wine Advocate - April 1999 |
|
"Its dark ruby colour is accompanied by luscious, black cherry and currant fruit intermixed with notes of mocha, coffee, and toast. The wine displays excellent richness, a sweet, expansive mid-palate, medium body, and a supple finish."

| International Wine Magazine - Summer 1999 |

"A supple Pauillac with a fruity quality. A remarkable whole that successfully combines fine, mellow tannins, controlled strength, and beautifully clean, ripe fruit. An extremely feminine wine with a lingering sensation of lightness. A superb vintage. (17.5/20)."

| Claude Kolm - The Fine Wine Review - August 1998 |
|
"As has become customary, Pichon Lalande has produced one of the finest wines in the Médoc. The 1997 has a superb nose with some oak and spice to the fruit. In the mouth, the wine is a little plummy but with fine concentration and a pudding-like texture. (89-92)."
