A firm, powerful, and rich wine, extremely fruity in its youth, with exceptional balance, that has a long life ahead of it.

Cold and rainy but good for the water-table.

Very rainy in April. Fairly high temperatures in May. Very early bud burst. A short cooler period caused an uneven and prolonged flowering. Mid point of flowering June 4th.

Very hot and dry July and August. The véraison took place quickly and evenly. Good concentration of the grapes. Mid point of changing colour August 8th.

The grapes were mature and very healthy. The Cabernets Francs were remarkable. Overall the harvest took place in very good weather, despite the odd shower. Harvest from September 17th to September 28th.

Robert Parker - Bordeaux - November 1998
"One of the stars of the vintage, this opaque purple-colored wine possesses a gorgeously perfumed, exotic, smoky, black currant, Asian spice, and sweet vanillin bouquet. It is followed by thick, rich, moderately tannic flavors that exhibit medium to full body, good structure, outstanding purity, and a classically layered, long, pure, finish. This terrific Pichon Lalande should evolve effortlessly for 18-20 years. 91/100."

Serena Sutcliffe - Tasting Notes - April 1999
"Surprisingly opulent, plummy and plump nose. A touch of vanillin and even tarry 'torrefaction'. Marked acidity to match the soft fruit. Excellent attack and pure Médoc definition. Has not been to charm school but has great flavour. Would be excellent with strong, even gamey food."

Decanter Magazine - December 1998
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED **** "Classic Pauillac nose, with well-integrated fruit. Rounded fruit, with a good level of tannin on the palate; a classic, opulent style, with good length."
