The most under-estimated vintage of the decade. A remarkable success in spite of the rain: rounded and fleshy with a long finish.

Second very cold winter in a row. Snow in January and February (-12°C).

April hot and sunny. June very cold and rainy. Flowering of the Merlot took place in rainy conditions. Mid point of flowering June 15th.

July was fairly hot but was marked by 15 days of rain. August was hotter than normal. Mid point of changing colour August 16th.

Exceptional weather in September. Ripening under good conditions. The grapes were extremely healthy when the rain arrived in October. Vendange from October 5th to 16th.

Robert Parker - Bordeaux - November 1998
"This wine typifies Pichon-Lalande with graceful, velvety texture, rich cassis-scented and cassis falvoured fruit, medium body, and a satiny finish. It is faithful to the style sought by the château. Offering a fragrant, velvety mouthful of wine, it should be drunk up immediately. It was one of my favourite wines of the vintage, and while still delicious, increasingly fragile. 86/100."

Serena Sutcliffe – Sotheby's Tasting notes – April 1995
"Very good fruit, well underpinned by a pleasant structure. Harmonious and very successful for the year. Drink from now. Ideal 'luncheon claret'.."

James Seely - Great Bordeaux Wines - November 1997
"Nice garnet, shading to brown. Nose open, with upfront fruit. Lightish, but with nice fruit; a bit short, good now, and for a year or two. A good 1987."

The Wine Spectator - April 1996
"An elegant, subtle but complex wine that is understated in its mature spice and fruit flavors. Easy and smooth in texture, nicely balanced. Drink now through 2000."
