A vintage made largely from the ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. Through an extremely strict selection, this wine is one of the few successes.

Cold.

April was warm and dry. Rapid development of the vines. May and June were cold and rainy disrupting growth and flowering. The Merlot suffered from coulure and millerandage. Mid point of flowering June 24th .

Excellent weather, then rain . The ripening of the grapes was uneven and drawn out. Mid point of changing colour August 20th.

Cold, rainy, showers. Harvest October 4th to 14th.

Michael Broadbent - Decanter Magazine - 1999
"The fifteen year old Pichon had lost its initial depth of colour but still had chubby cheeks, vestiges of youthful ruby. Unsurprisingly, it had a Cabernet dominated nose, raw rather than ripe, with good weight and flavour but an over-dry finish."

Serena Sutcliffe – Sotheby's Tasting notes – April 1995
"This was always one of the very best wines of a poor, unripe vintage - one almost wondered how it was achieved in the very young tastings. Good oak helps. Drink now."

Clive Coates - Grands Vins - 1995
"Good colour for the vintage. Now mature. Nose getting a little stringy. On the palate the wine is more generous. Medium body. The new oak is evident and gives it a little lushness. Not too lean. A very good result. But drink now."

Wine Spectator - February 1986
"Elegant and rich with power and finesse. Wonderful flavours and complexity, long on the palate. Very tasty already. "Wine of the Vintage" 94/100."
