A late vintage that benefitted from an Indian Summer. A smooth, soft, supple wine with good complexity and flavoursome tannins.

Mild.

Cold and rainy. Late and irregular flowering that lasted for more than four weeks. Mid point of flowering June 25th

Hot and dry. Low rainfall. Small grapes with high sugar levels and relatively low acidity. Mid point of changing colour September 3rd.

Hot and dry September. September 20th was the only rainy day in the month. The water did not reach the roots. The crop was picked in excellent health and at full maturity. Harvest on October 12th.

Robert Parker - Bordeaux - November 1998
"A lovely, medium-weight wine that has been very well vinified, the 1980 Pichon-Lalande is delightful for current drinking. The bouquet offers spicy, cedary scents intermingled with copious, ripe, aromas of blackcurrants. This is a soft, velvety, very nicely concentrated wine from a vintage considered poor to mediocre."

Serena Sutcliffe – Sotheby's Tasting notes – April 1995
"Again, almost a miracle for the year – it rivalled the Firsts from the start. Still gives pleasure."

Clive Coates - Grands Vins - 1995
"Good colour for the vintage, but quite brown at the rim. Mellow nose, but beginning to lose its fruit and elegance now. Still attractive on the palate though. Good grip. Quite plump. Reasonable structure. Shows very well for an 1980. Plenty of attraction.."
