2006 vintage
Again, a very dry year, particularly during the vegetative period of the vines from April to July. The result of these climatic conditions produced hydric stress which gave the grape a very good homogeneous colour change . The cocktail of drought, very high temperatures, heat waves in July and a cold month of August created marked disparities between the parcels and the soils of the region. Thanks to the great terroir, the vines were able to offset the effect of the unusual climatic conditions.
Very important work, such as a selective green harvest and a very selective deleafing, was undertaken in the vineyard. It is these operations that are the key to the success and exceptional quality of Pichon in this vintage.
A delicate vinification process had to be adapted to the specific conditions of the vintage: extraction had to be conducted gently, particularly at the end of the fermentation in order to boost the velvety texture, to enhance the perfect expression of the fruit and to achieve the elegant character of Pichon. Quick, incisive human decisions and a great terroir were the key factors this year for making the best wines up to their true potential. These wines are rich in tannins and they have a magnificent colour. The Cabernets and the Petits Verdots are showing at their best : the Cabernets Francs are delicate with a fine tannic structure and the Petits Verdots are aromatic with a well balanced mellow texture. The Cabernet Sauvignons have remarkable depth. The wines have not yet finished their malolactic fermentation We will wait with patience for the malolactic fermentation to soften the persistent coolness of certain lots.
