Vertical Tasting from 1926 – 2003 at Taillevent
Wishing to celebrate the year of the 80th birthday of May Eliane de Lencquesaing
the American physician and collector of fine wine, Bipin Desai organized a gathering of friends, journalists and personalities from the world of wine for a lunch and tasting at Taillevent on December 16th.
Present were François Audouze, Robert Assaf, Michel Bettane, Clive Coats, Laurens Delpech, Michael Fridjhon, Antoine Gerbelle, Wolfgang Grunewald, Jan Erik Paulson, David Peppercorn, Serena Sutcliffe, Jamie Rhee, Hugh Johnson, John Kapon, Simon Tam. Gildas d’Ollone, Director General and Thomas Dô-Chi-Nam, Technical Director of Pichon also participated at this event.
These happy guests tasted twenty-one vintages of Pichon, from 1926 to 2003, served in three Series, accompanied by exquisite dishes prepared by Alain Soliveres.
The vintages 1934-1955-1964-1975-1978-1990-2001 were served with a ravioli de champignons en bouillon de pot au feu truffé 1926-1953-1985-1986-1989-1995-1996 with a Royale de foie gras de canard au cappucino de chataignes
and finally the vintages 1929, 1945, 1959, 1961, 1982, 2000 and 2003 with Quasi de veau aux légumes d´automne (see Jan Paulson´s report herewith)
This tasting was a moving experience for Madame de Lencquesaing as it retraced the history of her family at the head of this prestigious growth : 1926 and 1959 the first and the last vintage vinified by her father ; 1978, the year of her arrival at Pichon; 1982 her Californian Pichon ; 1995 the year of her 70th birthday; 2003, the year of extremes …
She also gave a brilliant demonstration of her knowledge of the vintages and the “terroir” of Pichon, filling out her speech with unusual and fascinating anecdotes. A convinced audience acknowledged that Pichon Lalande has always had the ability to produce fine wines on a regular basis, elegant and complex that are drunk with pleasure not only when young but also when they have attained great maturity.
