On February 24, 2004 in New York, an esceptionnel blind tasting of the first great growths 1996 versus their challengers were carried out by the Executive Wine Seminar.
All the wines were double decanted and were poured from numbered bags from 1 to 13. Participants were asked to vote for their three favourites wines. Three points were awarded for a first place, two for a second place and one for a third place.
The results of this blind tasting performed by the 50 tasters from EWS and their guest speaker Jean-Marc Quarin put the château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1996 at the top of the list :

Deeply colored. Big, rich, sexy nose filled with currants, pepper, leather and cedar. On the palate we have more of the same : great fruit, plenty of wood, just the right amount of acidity, with everything in perfect balance. Powerful yet refined, this wine displays unmistakable Pauillac character. Incredibly long and consistent finish.
A stunningly delicious wine that got better and better with each sip. Jean Marc Quarin’s favourite wine of the evening, and the crowd’s as well. It was quite an accomplishment to beat the first growths ! |
